reactivity (AHR), because of inherent problems with using a pharmacologic agent in epidemiologic surveys. To our knowledge, no studies exist that compare MIC with EVH in known asthmatics. We conducted a prospective, randomized, crossover trial with a group of subjects (n = 16) who met the American Thoracic Society definition of asthma with these objectives: (1) to compare the sensitivity of EVH with MIC; (2) to compare the quantitative response of one test with the response to the other challenge; and (3) to

Acute bronchial obstruction following inhalation of PAF in asthmatic and normal subjects: comparison with methacholine.

Platelet-activating factor (PAF) may play a role in the pathophysiology of asthma but controversies exist about bronchial responsiveness toward this mediator in asthma. We have compared the variations in the specific conductance (sGaw) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) in 12 asthmatics and 12 normal subjects after inhalation of doubling doses of PAF (15-120 micrograms) and metha...

Effects of PAF antagonist, BN52021, on the PAF-, methacholine-, and allergen-induced bronchoconstriction in asthmatic children.

Platelet-activating factor (PAF) is an inflammatory mediator capable of inducing protracted inflammation of the airways and bronchial hyperreactivity. Twenty-one asthmatic children were evenly divided into three groups and each group performed a double-blind, placebo-controlled and crossover study on the effect of aerosolized BN52021, a PAF antagonist, on the bronchoconstriction induced by PAF,...

Airway Responsiveness to Inhaled Aspirin is Influenced by Airway Hyperresponsiveness in Asthmatic Patients

BACKGROUND/AIMS Many patients with aspirin-induced asthma have severe methacholine airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), suggesting a relationship between aspirin and methacholine in airway response. This study was performed to determine whether methacholine AHR affects the response of asthmatics to inhaled aspirin. METHODS The clinical records of 207 asthmatic patients who underwent inhalation c...

Depression of polymorphonuclear chemotaxis and T-lymphocyte proliferation following histamine inhalation in man.

Histamine, in vitro, via H2-receptor activation, exerts an inhibitory effect on polymorphonuclear (PMN) chemotaxis and T-lymphocyte proliferation. The aim of this study was to verify these histamine inhibitory effects in man. Healthy and asymptomatic asthmatic volunteers inhaled a histamine (0.1%), methacholine (0.1%) or saline aerosol for 3 min. Asthmatics were selected on the basis of low bro...

Patients With Mild Asthma*

Background: Conflicting results from previous studies on the effect of bronchial challenge on ven¬ tilatory patterns in asthmatics may be due to airflow obstruction present before induction of bron¬ chospasm onset, as well as the different degrees of bronchoconstriction induced. Purpose and methods: We examined the ventilatory response to stepwise increments in respiratory resistance (Rrs) indu...
